I am thinking D-Link but not 5 port how much would i get one for and does anyone have one that they want 2 sell??

Luke you dont need a gigbit switch for your little lans, however, for something around 8 port (shit brand) your looking at $200 retail, just stick with your 10-100 switch or if you wanna go one better get a 10-200 like i have.

Yer, i'll wait till prices dropp a bit.
Just i got Gigabit and cant use it / a few friends are getting it aswell.
Thx.

Rhooky
13-09-2004, 06:33 PM
yeh but for borises little lans we are sick of 10-100 we want gigabit :D

Boris_Stephens
13-09-2004, 06:34 PM
Ok Then Rhooky sponser it so we can get Gigabit ^_^

Rhooky
13-09-2004, 06:39 PM

^_^ Bet that needs Gigabit aswell ^_^

Rhooky

this has turned into a pointless thread

Tru, Nice Avartar.

Thanks for feedback Lee and Rhooky i spose spamback. :)

Rhooky im the guy that taught Luke to play like a champ and turn little n00bs such as your self into pools of insignificant gib and when you actualy learn abit about computers come back and talk to the big boys, Games only utilize 10Mbs IF THAT! a gigabit switch is fucking pointless for around 10 kids playing counter-strike! only lan-X that has about 80 ppl playing games like Far Cry could untilize that kinda switch.

Rhooky
13-09-2004, 06:57 PM
That is true, we were liking the point of a movie in 7 seconds sorta thing.

*NoN*Da]rY*
13-09-2004, 06:59 PM
"that is true" U got no fucking idea if thast true! U dont know much/anything about computers so just back down little man! your a fool anyway a movie in 7 seconds is dependent on alot of things but i cant be fucked explaining it to u.

mudgie

If you BOTH have Sata, 10,000 RPM hard drive and Gbit network, then you'll probably get 7 seconds.

But you probably don't.

Joshu
14-09-2004, 10:03 AM
Screw SATA, let them run a ram disk for test's sake. :/

Moo
14-09-2004, 11:41 AM
yeah.. ram disk is not an installation technique

Joshu
14-09-2004, 11:58 AM
Yeah, funny that Moo, I thought it was a section of RAM that got allocated to a logical drive, visible by the operating system and with awesome reaction speeds, and with all data disappearing upon reboot! But apparently I was wrong, and it's NOT the installation technique I'm looking for.

Boris: You don't need gigabit switching. You want to use that between switches to ensure that you've got proper 100mbps for each user.

Boris_Stephens
14-09-2004, 06:38 PM
Tru, I dont need it. Thanks.

Moo
15-09-2004, 10:03 AM
fine....ram the disk into the drive..... see if i care

cvt
15-09-2004, 07:04 PM
what garbage, everyone needs gigabit.

100base TX is SOOO old.....
get with the times kids..
6x hdd's all capable of 48mBps or more...
and we trasfer along at 10...
ffs, how gay..
I will make a personal demand that we start using intels 10 gigabit adaptors and a 10 gigabit switch.
that should stop this bottleneck issue we have!

.

Borris, don;t listen to them, go gigabit and 10gigabit between switches to ensure you have gigabit, that would be much nicer :)

Well said, of course use ramdisk for testing!!!
moo can;t even install XP remember ;)

go 10gigabit backbone to gigabit ports, noones wants plain gigabit, we need more speed than that!

radass

and whatever you do, dont get a shit brand switch gigabit or not .. if you do, you'll be dissappointed

netgear have been consistantly good switches that i can vouch for, from the 8 port 10/100 i have had at home for years to the gigabit backbone we use at lanx.

Network games are optimised for internet use. i would be very suprised if an 80 player game of just about anything would stress out a good quality 10Mbps switch (with 80 ports :P)

Of Course, i havn't been to tafe, so i'm not a 'big boy' and i'm probably quite wrong ;) hey?! hey?!!! ~nudge nudge~

Gigabit generally translates to dc speeds of about 30-35MB/s using normal computers which is about 3 times what we see at lanx with the 24port 10/100 switches with dual gigabit uplinks to the all gigabit backbone .. it would be worth it if it were cheaper. Don't lose heart boris ! :D Gigabit will be affordable soon

*peer to peer gigabit = 38MBps on 3 meter cable

wow, I never even spotted NDK's post.

I just love it when 'users' abuse other 'users' over a little something they 'read' or was 'taught' and am now a super 'professional' on.
watch it dude, unless you can prove you know your shit with helpful information for those that don't, your
1. looking like a cockhead
2. entering cvt's enemy list

and trust me, you don;t want to be on my enemy list.
and if you get there, trust me, you'll be sorry!

what fun :D

Well if Gigabit gets cheaper. I will defenetly get it.
I will get it anyway.
Rhooky does know a bit like me and is trying 2 learn so why flame?

(not saying i know loads im learning and taking in knowlege)

ok..

moo can't even use XP without breaking it then not being able to install it.

sound better :p

Boris.
ignore ndk, he learnt that the PCI BUS is a bottleneck, he knows that its also dependant on a lot of factors he can;t be fucked explaining to anyone, and that would definatly be the only factor, definatly the cable, how could copper move electricity that fast, hard drives arn't built for those speeds, except those with hyper-seek and ddr3 buffer, and their not even on the market yet, i mean, the plastic in the PCI slot isn;t even cabale of 1 gigabit.. unless of course its a red slot, red goes faster, like cars, and chocoalate bars, chocloate bars with red in the go faster, so it was only commen sense to make gigabit enabled PCI ports with a gigabit enabled PCI bus red, just you ask him :p

its all about learning, and first step is not noting down what I wrote above :)

Boris_Stephens
15-09-2004, 09:47 PM
What happens if i spraypaint my case red will the CPU increase??

Sounds like moo + winxp dont mix ^_^ :)

Rhooky
15-09-2004, 09:51 PM
Maby i should get a red gigabit card in hope that it will go faster :D

cvt
15-09-2004, 10:03 PM
ok... so you missed the first step....

but of course a red case will run faster, specially on a lino floor while the pains still wet..

as for the CPU ....... doubt it :p, but only one way to find out.. but the good side, people will think it goes faster because of its colour and the scratches on the bottom and dent and scratches on 1 side (from sliding it around on the lino floor while it was still wet)

radass
15-09-2004, 10:04 PM
netgear is blue, they must be shit :|

Rhooky
15-09-2004, 10:05 PM
lol sounds like a bit of fun. when we modded that old case we should have slid it around a bit :D

Boris_Stephens
15-09-2004, 10:07 PM
I usually use D-Link but i got a new pc and its got onbaord giga so yer.

I have alwayse used D-Link and has no probs (Switches).
(There black if that helps :S is that fast??) ^_^

cvt
15-09-2004, 10:07 PM
blues cool, so in theory, might be good, I don't know... NDK, any input on this?

but in theory, if its cooler, the resistance in the lines should be less, so should run more efficiently.
I doubt it would be as fast as if it was red, but could have a bit more reliablilty being so cool...
i mean, red is definatly hot!
maybe you;d be sacrificing speed for stability...

*shrugs

all this bullshit is making my head hurt.

Rhooky
15-09-2004, 10:10 PM
Look at overclocking u give up stability in a way for speed

Boris_Stephens
15-09-2004, 10:13 PM
I think Jazzaz mobo overclocked the Video Card.

Nah what do u guys think.
His PC is like not dusty. Heating up like a be arch.
Hes got a Radeon 9200 Rhooky?
And it heats up real fast and just simply reboots or turns itself off when it gets 2 hot.

He only has the PowerSuply FAN (80mil fans excluding CPU)
I was thinking the case is heating up and the hot air is going no where.

What are your theroys / suggestions for the little man??

Rhooky
15-09-2004, 10:14 PM
Lol yer its an S-Media? (not sure) radeon 9200se 128mb version

or go stupid trying to do an impossible...... http://www.lanx.org.au/forum/showthread.php?s=&threadid=760

and most do it wrong.. and give it a bad name..

what CPU man, what HSF is on the CPU?
how long is 'real quick'

if things got "nasty" and was in a pic.

Ah, also, if you go gigabit you might want to invest in some cat6 cable to replace your cat5 network cables. They're built to be a bit better at coping with the higher frequency of love that gigabit spews forth

Your Dad was/is a teacher at sebas tech yeah ? He didn't teach me but i remember that ppl thought he was rad

errr might i suggest minator, they have 8 port gigabit + 2 gigabit nic's for around $300 , :)

radass

minator ? is that a brand of hardware ?

or do you mean the comic book store ?

Boris_Stephens
17-09-2004, 03:41 PM
OK i figure the 8 port giga but whats are nics?

*NoN*Da]rY*
17-09-2004, 03:58 PM
Gah i had all of 2 minutes to type that shit, and i just cant be fucked explaning what i had said.

Luke a NIC is a Network Interface Card. Its just a network card, some are made to a higher standard than others and ones that offer gigabit do suffer from the standard PCI 32 bottleneck unless they utilize PCI 64 which doesnt suffer from this bottleneck as the slot was designed purely to support gigabit cards :D

I dont doubt for one second that you know your shit Dave, its just some days i cant be fucked trying to help anyone. Lol ive been accepted for Microsoft Certified Training in Network Eginereing so i guess it wont be to long until i can i have more than some lousy TAFE certificates behind me :woot

radass
17-09-2004, 04:17 PM
haha yeah some MS certifications :P

I wasn't picking your knowledge, nor your certification

Just the attitude :) You couldn't be bothered helping him, but strangely you _could_ be bothered to slap him down and assert your superiority (which is where picking on tafe comes in - not picking on tafe itself but it as a basis to consider one's self a 'big boy')

maybe i was just being a harsh cunt :)
