Ok, i was totally wrong about doom3 (multiplayer wise anyway, single rocks!) but i'm NOT wrong about this! We've been playing the open beta version of DOW online for nearly a week now, and it's one of the greatest rts games of all time

If you love the rts, get the DOW open beta. it's free !

Full game comes out within the month

This game make generals look like homos, it's beautiful to play even though it's still only in beta, HOPEFULLY we will have the full game before XvZ:2, so get it and have a few games so you are familiar with it. Best RTS EVER!!! :D

EDIT: arg! i hate that!. didnt mean to hit post.

Seen this game called Nosferatu: wrath of malechi. Looks okay. http://www.nosferatu-game.com/ The site has music (warning) and this silly pic of nosferatu jumps out every 2 minutes (other warning). But the game looks good thou.

What im really waiting for is GuildWars

DoW beta is great... The interactivity between units is like something we've never seen in an RTS... the Marine Force commander taking out the Bloodthirster is something worth seeing!

Found a few glitches though (hey! its a beta version innit?)...When you purchase the melee weapons upgrade (power swords) and you also have a force commander, his daemon hammer changes for a power sword (which in itself isn't meant to happen), yet sometimes you can also glimpse the hammer head on the tip of the sword... makes for an interesting weapon...

Overall the game kicks ass... the morale system is cool, and the diversity between the armies is also cool. Though they really didn't need to do much in the way of creating that sort of stuff, since practically all of it comes from the tabletop game (of which i am a gamer myself), but i'm not complaining...

could crap on 'bout the resources n'stuff but i can't be bothered atm...look it up yourself!

this game is so gay.
fucking space marine rushes.
all these hopeless noobs do it build 2 marine squads and a commander and rush you.
and unless you are doing the same thing there is no way to stop it!!
its gay!!
and then they have the audacity to call you a noob cause you got ran over.
if only there was no such thing as the internet and these people had to say it to your face.
its such a good game but these fools that do the rush are really letting it down.
stupid gay game.

What'd happen then?:D Would it involve a sore loser, a non-drunken noob-slap brawl (kind of like a slow-motion catfight but WAY less sexy), an assault suit and a few years of ass-pounding in prison?

Or would they just shame you to your face?

The same thing happens in _all_ (well, most) RTSs - Starcraft, Total Annihilation, Savage (sorta), Generals/Zero Hour... there'll always be a way to rush, it'll always be a decent and normal form of attack, and there'll always be people who sook about getting hit by it. Bear in mind that when said noob builds two squads and a commander, they still have to move it across the playing field (I'm assuming there's a playing field to move across :D ) - and that's your advantage right there; you've got time to build defense (if the game has it), or to entrench some troops, or whatever else would give you a home ground advantage. If it's not enough time, use the feedback form to complain to the game makers; after all, you are a beta tester and they do want your feedback.

Kenny rushes in Zero Hour (well, until people stopped playing him). That'd be a funny sight.

I think Spot's point is that sportsmanship as foreign as the concept may be to online gaming, is still important to some people.

SPOT
04-09-2004, 01:43 PM
indeed eoin!!
anyone can do the rush, but what point is it having more than 2 unit types in the game if there is no point in using them??
and by the sounds of your post joshu, you sound like you are one of the rushers.
if you have played dawn of war, you would know that base def in it only slows the attackers down.
a force commander is so tuff he can run past it and take your base apart!!
thats one man that can win the game!!

Moo
04-09-2004, 02:39 PM
yeah ... 40k is all about minitures. so all the defense would be units. In tthe table top game, there was only 1 building that you could buy for your army and deploy as you wanted. It looked like one of those bunkers from SC, cost 50 points (same as a Rhino APC). And they really wherent that good.

So how they go about making defesive buildings guys?

Do I? Again your ignorance shines though! If I did it with... hmm, let's see... MY FIRST UNIT! (a.k.a. A RUSH) Then you would have a leg to stand on. But as Aurora's are pretty much my LAST unit, lets see... it's an ATTACK... Not my fault that you turtle and don't put any pressure on me or Dave, we just sit back unopposed and then run over you.

yeah as i said earlier tho you can run past them, and they cost about as much as a sm squad.
and they dont really do much in the way of damage.
you really need guys and turrets to be effective, but its just so damn expensive to do that.
once you play you'll know what i mean.

Moo
04-09-2004, 03:09 PM
a squad costs the same as a bunker?

hmmm.. in the table top, a marine squad was about 170 points, so...so.... yeah.

Indeed, I haven't played the game so I don't know jack. :D You can't gain any terrain bonuses with anti-infantry units or anything like that?

I'm not a rusher either (as Kenny stated, I'm a yukky turtler) but I do know that there are usually no-rush game rooms on the internet for most RTSs. (although my experience, as always, is based solely on starcraft) There you shall find the people with sportsmanlike qualities.

And Kenny, just because the Aurora is one of the last units, doesn't mean it isn't the core of a successful rush for that General.

SPOT
04-09-2004, 03:38 PM
yeah moos they dont have bunkers just stationary heavy bolter turrets.
turrets are 150 pts marines are 200 for 4.
you can gain terrain bonuses, but those places are normally in no mans land.
there are ways to stop rushes, its just that the game isn't really for turtlers.
you have to be out and about capping points or you'll have no cash.

Joshu

Tell me, how does the game go about the customisation of each squad? (ie. Weapon/gear customisation) - would it be tediously long before the game starts, or do you predefine squads before taking them into battle?

I spose I better research this game (http://www.relic.com/product/dawnofwar/), huh.

SPOT
04-09-2004, 05:03 PM
you buy a squad of 4 marines and then you can add guys to it for a small cost.
and then add heavy weapons to it as well.

And Joshu, you are wrong agian, you are still saying that something done well into the game is a rush, which is... completely wrong. When me and dave played each other, it was 50-50, because he would keep the pressure on and half the time I wouldn't even get to build aurora's. If you are a shit rts player (i.e. you) and sit in you base till you get spanked, I suppose every attack in your book is a rush...

One of my pet hates in the RTS world, is people who cry about rushing. The WHOLE point of the real-time-strategy game, is that everything is based on time, and whoever can make the most out of that time wins. If you were MEANT to wait until you 'had everything' and were comfortable with being attacked, then the game would have been created so that you start with everything.

But they invariably arent, because the game is about time, not comfort. You arent supposed to build every building straight away, nor are you supposed to neglect your begining units in favour of building up to your more powerful ones. Power is relative, so in effect the early units are just as powerful as the strong ones, in their own timeframe. The RTS game is really about learning to balance time and power, any anyone who cant fend off a simple commander+2 swads early game attack and come out on top as a result doesn't really understand this. All that time the wasted getting to your base (as joshu correctly pointed out) really should have been spent on capturing the resource locations with those squads .. once you take out the attack you will find yourself in the position of having captured more resource locations and thus with a greater income. At this point your relative millitary and economic power is much greater than that of your opponent, and you should dominate the rest of the game.

DOW, being a good rts, has made it so that there is the potential for balanced action pretty much right from the start and I think this is a good thing. I want to start playing the game as soon as it starts, not 15 or 20 minutes after that

One last point, is that RTS's are actually balanced on time as well. Consider generals zero hour (a fun but sadly not perfectly balanced rts) .. the infantry general, is fucking tough as fuck (perhaps a little much in fact) right at the start of the game, whereas the superweapons general is weak as piss. add some time however, and the situation is reversed .. the inf gen is pertty much the same as it was, but the super gen has the awesome (slightly too much imo) combination of snipers, emp pats and alpha aroras ...

.. so the game is about time. It's obvious that a fully equiped super gen will defeat a fully equiped inf gen. so the inf gen's task becomes to prevent the super gen from ever achieving that level of relative power, and he'd better get onto that as soon as possible

time ..

time ..

TIME !!! learn to play the early game people ! like a game of chess it dictates how the mid and ultimately end games will play out ! the early game is about giving your mid and end game the best possible chance ..

and shit.

Yeha i'd be agreeing with the fact that turtleuers suck and don't win often.

a classic example of turtleuers sucking is in age of empires 2, (a classic but still one of the best strat games of all time). the byzantines bee nthe massive defensive army they are get pounded by anyone that does any sort of aggressive attacks. For example whenever i played my brother the first thing he would be doing is wasting resources building walls because he knew that i would atteck after around 15 minutes playing. Then i'd build unit producing buildings just outside the range of towers and keep throwing units into the grinder. i'd win in the end because i controlled basically the entire map and all the resuorces instead of just the couple that i started next to.

In short turtleing sucks and doesn't win games very often. another readon i'm looking forward to dawn of war is that its more based on units and not base defenses like a lot of other games

radass
06-09-2004, 02:40 PM
yeah you can't really turtle because

a. your resources totally depend on capturing the strategic points
and b. as you say, there's little in the way of defensive buildings - and they suck

That game looks nuts!

I'm a Tyanids man in 40k so I'm shattered that they weren't included :(... but I was a Chaos man before that so I'm happy enough (still chaos in fantasy). This might be one of those games where I decided to actually get good at the genre :P...
