joshu and I continued this conversation on msn, just for the record, the gist of it was that we coulld use his mobile as an analogue modem on the net for about $1 for 5 mins with no download fees, and if we could split that between enough people it could work out pretty cheap, say if we had 60 ppl involved that would cost about 33c an hour each ..
.. and that's prepaid rates. could prob find someone on a cheaper plan

yeah. gold/blue phones are pwned by the place that they sit in. IE: the ones at SMB computer labs is owned by SMB. These things have teh normal phone function, which get controlled by if you put coins in them or not. And most of the time, its just a matter of looking at the back of the unit or under it, to see where it plugs into the wall, and onto the phone network. just means you might have to have a really long phone cord. or enuff UTP to cover that distance and make one

OK, here's the deal. I'm on prepaid mobile which costs me 40c/minute offpeak to dial local calls. I can share that through a wingate'd gateway, about 40kbps of bandwidth - limited to ports 1863/443(msn) and 110(pop3). Maybe 80 for web.

This equates to $24/hour for the connection. I reckon if there's enough interest at the LAN, we can allow 6 or 8 people through at once IF - and ONLY IF - they agree to share costs with the SIM owner (my good self :)). That'll amount to around $2 each for 8 people to get on the internet for 30 minutes.

Well, I _did_ suggest to radass that we _could_ hassle the IT guys for them to set up a shitty firewall allowing only a few outbound ports, but the aforementioned Coding Hero reckons they'd be less than willing.

I go to mt helen all you need is an allnight access card and some one with a wireless card and some stupid lecturerer that didnt log off, or a student with a high internet quota, but I think there is like a big distance between and ethernet port in the like lab areas and the gaming area, and the chances of a lecturer still being logged in at 6pm on friday is slim too!!!
