Nathan put me onto this little gem:
http://www.forumplanet.com/planetdoom/topic.asp?fid=5733&tid=1438663
And i tell you, it works _really_ well, and nate reports it worked well for him on his geforce 4 mx440
i can now run ultra quality 800x600 nice and smooth, however for simply perfect smoothness i'm using still medium/1280x1024
also, for those interested, if you Ctrl-alt-~ you get the console (there's a setting to make it just ~ but i always hit it in the thick of combat so i like it this way) and type listcmds you get a list of commands and basic explanations
ones i found handy for benchmarking:
recorddemo
timedemo
I also was running task manager on my secondary display while playing, and noticed that doom was only using about 50% of the cpu (p4 2.8)
Anyone else finding shweet tweaks please post em here :D

so I might now be able to actually run doom 3 with my GF3 ti200 and xp2000?

not sure about the card, cpu should be fine though
for testing configs, there's a suppied demo that's good for benchmarking
timedemo demo1
i'm only getting 30fps on medium 1280, so i'm going to have to lower my settings :(
i am in the middle of running through a really good config and tweaking it on my system.
at the moment i am getting 60 - 30 fps.
it slows to 30 in some spots, but normally hovers around 40-50.
this is on 640x480 low detail, but 800 x 600 low detail is pretty much the same but can drop to 25ish and is normally on 40 fps.
ill get back to yas with a spanking config when im done.
one that will be fast and also look good.
oh!! and i have managed to get past the 4 player MP limit too :D!!

i have yet to test out doom 3 on my machine but once i get it what i will do is post my stats of my machine from un-0/c'ed and then when i have overclocked it so you can all see the basic difference of o/cing your gear for d3
cause the standard seems to be a ti4200 and 2.0ghz cpu
(AMD or P4)
A good tweak that's doing the rounds is this one, I can vouch for it in that it doesn't wreck the game at least. Apparently it gives FPS boost and i have noticed a bit of difference.

Dave, did I ever tell you how much I love you?
(note: love is currently unfounded, shall be founded when I play Doom3 single player, at a decent framerate.)

com_drawfps 1 - Show FPS
will give you Frames per Second in game play might be a little handy thing to play with for the FPS concious person...
also here's a few smaller tweaks you people might be interested in after you have completed the single player story mode..
Modify .def Files
The def files for this game can be found in "doom/base/def" folder. Open these files in a text editor to make modifications on all of the game variables. NOTE: Back up every file you're going to modify because incorrectly modifying these files can have unwanted effects on your game and without a backup you may have to reinstall the game, erasing the progress.
Nightmare difficulty setting
Use a text editor to edit the "doomconfig.cfg" file in the game folder (create a backup first!). Locate the following line and replace 0 with 1:
seta g_nightmare "0"
Enable player shadows
Use a text editor to edit the "doomconfig.cfg" file in the game folder (create a backup first!). Locate the following line and replace 0 with 1:
seta g_showPlayerShadow "0"
Third person view
Use a text editor to edit the "doomconfig.cfg" file in the game folder (create a backup first!). Add the following line to the file, and you'll be able to use P while in the game for third-person view:
bind "p" "toggle pm_thirdperson"
Use [~] to access the console
There is two ways to open the console with the [~] key only. One is to brind down the console and type "com_allowConsole 1" (without the quotes). The other is to generate a file called "autoexec.cfg" in game's "Data" directory, and put in the following line:
seta com_allowConsole "1"
Martian Buddy Locker Code
Go to http://www.martianbuddy.com for the Martian buddy locker code of 0508. The web site address is found in a spam mail on the pda of Alan Dorweiler.
the following test maps can be extracted from the pak000.pk4 file and played:
Test Map 1 - testmaps/testmaps_lotsaimps.map
Test Map 2 - testmaps/test_box.map
Test Map 3 - testmaps/test_boxstack.map

Setting the variable to "128" instead of "20" improved my framerate by about 200-300%. I can run 1280x1024 on High at around 3FPS... and 800x600 medium runs perfectly.
Not sure why iD didn't up this in the first place. Perhaps they had a reason?
i have managed to get 800 x 600 low detail running at 49.5 fps on timedemo demo1.
so now i am happy.
i did have to sacrfice shadows for it, but i still turn em on for sp. :P

um... maybe 32 as an original setting, because the apparent "minimum" cough*bullshit*cough video card requirement is a gf2?

I get smooth play 800 x 600 on high details, I'm gonna try this tweak later :)
I reckon ID must've had a weird reason for crappying up the game. Maybe they had to make a general number for everyone's computer.

I'm pretty sure (although I'm not the expert) that the setting enables higher texture cacheing in your system RAM, not your video RAM.

i have tryed this above Tweak and havn;t really managed to get much more performance difference... i had it originally at "20" and for some reason some people have it set as 32 and some at 20 by defualt does anyone know why?? then i had beefed to to 92 no diff then 128 no diff only setting this to 256 was i able to get much of a significant performance difference at 1024x768. I had done the same tests at 800x600 also and never saw a diff at either res till 256???
does anyone know how this tweak actually works and to what part of our systems does it seem to work in favour for,,,Video RAM or System RAM...

worked well on my system ..
anyway, for the ATI users theres a beta (http://www.ati.com/support/infobase/4547.html) version of the catalyst 4.9 drivers that contains some optimisations for doom, i got about a 10% boost from installing these at lower resolutions. I've also overclocked my 9800 pro and my p4 2.8 a little, end result is that i'm getting 63.6 fps on timedemo demo1 at medium/800x600 and all the good stuff turned on ..
too bad it's looks a bit shitty not being the lcd's native res. best medium/1280x1024 score i can get currently is 33.6 fps on demo1
