View Full Version : NV for Doom3

My hat goes off to NV for making a better (and cheaper) card for doom3 while ati sat on their fingers in their 2 years of supremacy
Looks like my next card will be an NV
gotta wait for the 512 MB ones that can play doom3 at full quality though :D
and, for some cash :(

so much for ati saying that shader model 3 wasn't worth implementing... speaking of doom3, are we gonna have a doom3 comp at lanxvlanz2?
a good comparison of performance is at
http://www2.hardocp.com/article.html?art=NjQyLDI= HardOCP (http://www2.hardocp.com/article.html?art=NjQyLDI= )
That will be even more elitist than the Farcry comp (read: more whinging) :)

Yeah probably but so is 1/2 the other comps (the usual thebalance vs raddass final at quake3), tk owning at ut2k4...
I mean whinging that their PC wont run it
But it would be fun to have a go at anyway

oh ok.
• A 1.5-gigahertz Intel Pentium 4 chip or AMD Athlon 1500.
• 384 megabytes of memory.
• Two gigabytes of hard drive space.
• An nVidia GeForce 3 graphics card or better; or an ATI Technologies 8500 or better.
If your existing rig doesn't meet these specs, here's a guide to beefing it up to play Doom 3 in all its gory glory.
Requirements aren't too bad, but a lot of people only have 256meg ram....

I have just got Doom 3 today
i have to say this it's FARKING AWSOME!!!
i wouldn't take those above speks to lightly cause i have a fairly fast system...
AMD 2600+ barton
nForce2 Ultra
1 Gig of DDR 400 RAM
GF4 Ti 4200 270core 570mem
and i can run this at max fps of 60 at 800x600 at medium detail to play smooth...
i suggest to people update their video cards...
although i hear that 9200se's can play at 640x480 ok???
interested people should contact me...
radass

runs ace on my p42.8/9800pro
runs fine in high detail, although medium is smoother so i leave it on that. and it's looks awesome no matter what settings you use
Everywhere you read people are saying it's a perfectly playable and enjoyable experience even at 640x480 (which makes sense because it has to run on an xbox)
cant wait for some multiplayer action
Aphex

I hear that LAN can only be playable for up to 8 maybe 12 players...cause of bandwidth probs??? can any one verify this cause this has to be played at the next X v Z
radass
03-08-2004, 11:11 PM
max of 4 players, and not because of bandwidth problems, i mean q3 supported 32 players no worries. It's just a different type of multiplayer, that focuses on the individual head to head dualing aspect rather than the objective based team aspect, something that suits me fine. more than 4 or 5 ppl in a deathmatch just turns it into 'shoot rockets at groups of people' spamfest .. whereas a 1 on 1 with similarly skilled players provides a really tense enjoyable game that is more about map control than aim ..
.. just realised this whole time i had been playing on 640x480 medium ! (it looked great)
Now it's on 1280x1024 and it's mm mmm shweet
Now it's on 1280x1024 and it's mm mmm shweet
i take it that means Mr Dave is feeling very erotic?

At times like these, you wish you had ADSL. Or could be stuffed buying the game.
Or you wish you could upgrade your rig... is this thread going to spontaneously explode in a lot of rig specs?
Athlon XP 2600+ (333MHz core)
512MB 3200 DDRAM
nVidia Ti4200 128MB
While we're on the topic of nVidia, does anyone know a way I can ID my card? It says it's a Ti4200, but it outperforms other Ti4200s by a long shot. Perhaps it's a Ti4800 in disguise? Is this possible?

Man, I'm comparing to higher-CPU systems with R9600s and Ti4200s/4800s/FX5200s/5700s. It's wierd, I say...
I'm happy considering the card was free :D God bless USA people having a weakness for Australian people, and shipping off Ti4200/4800s to them.

Doom 3:
Graphics: Very Nice
Sound: Very Nice
Performance: FUCKING AWESOME!
Single: Very Nice
Multi:........ 8 player max..... 6 maps...... WORST FUCKING MULTI-PLAYER EVER!!! Why would you even entertain the thought of a comp. of this? Unless some awesome patch comes out for it there is not hope for it.
radass

king oath it's scary .. but then! you stop being scared for a bit and think 'fuck em !! bring em on!!' and charge about like a psycho, and then after a while you get shitscared again :D
dark room, headphones .. full on
actually having the light on in this room is even scarier, because it flickers sometimes (one of thos gay energy saving mini fluros) so it kind of bridges the gap between game and real :O

Not everyone prefers playing spammy and unorganised team games with teammates they haven’t practiced with - and besides we're already spoiled for choice for those games.
This will be about individual skill and intelligence, giving one gamer the chance to domminate over all other gamers in the comp, not holding hands and skipping down the yellow brick road ...
The more people there are in a game, the less overall control you have over the outcome, unless you are a field commander of a 'well oiled' team
This will be a comp for people who feel that they can bring something to the table, but if it's not for you, fair enough :D
As for the low map count, it's far better to have a few well designed maps than a shitload of normal ones, i think this is one of the reasons why people STILL play quakeworld (quake 1) online, because even after all this time they are still finding new ways to control the map. A smaller amount of (well designed) maps allows for a faster evolution of gameplay...
Besides, Spot and Crawz have seen 20 player servers, online.

yeah, saw some bigger servers online. That was a bit of a shock.
Doom 3 isn't all it's been hyped to be, IMHO. :(
...and god damn I need to upgrade. :| DAMN YOU RESOURCE HUNGRY GAME!@#
and just to note, it's limited to 4 players by default.
but as Dave said, we've got enough huge assed games with lots of fodder already, so bring on some skill with few people.
Can always do 2v2 tournament comps anyway.
Runs okay'ish on my rig at 640x480... low :(
P4 1.8Ghz @ 2.2Ghz (333fsb). (DAMN THAT FSB BLOWS)

It is worth noting that id never hyped it themselves .. it was fanbois like me :D id just quietly made the next logical step or 2 in engine design, and a fucking cool game using it
saw a 32 player server today

Doom3 seems quite a bit like Quake3 (single weapon modes... plasma rifle... and the console). (yes, I cheat, and I hope they burn in hell. It's my counter against the advantage they get from the "2 FPS" deal)
Multiplayer seems to be very restricted by your Frames, and also your monitor brightness. Also, whomever has the biggest gun can map-control rather easily.
What I really like, are the consoles you can control.
I don't plan on playing the singleplayer until I upgrade my graphics card. Ti4200 128MB just doesn't cut it, and I'm getting sorta sick of waiting for BTX / PCI-E.

radass
11-08-2004, 12:30 AM
no choice ? but there's budget lines in both brands. i used to sware by my 9000 pro, until it died (fucking gigabyte!) .. in fact the only reason i upgraded was the 9000 pro death .. i wanted to wait for the definative doom3 card .. which looks like it will be the next gen (after 6800) nv. Course, plenty of time for ati to pull their stinky fingers out

Doom3 is REALLY fucked up... there's shit growing out of the walls @ the mo'... a red growth, and it's making all sorts of weird sounds, and pulsating...
It's an awesome game, but scary as all fuck... it's not the fact that shit jumps out at you, it's the fact that you can hear shit, and it's not jumping out... like claws scraping on metal, shit like that.
Oh, and the other thing that always freaks me out is when your walking along an already dark passage, and then the power goes out... and your PDA fires up with screaming and gunfire... i've wasted countless amounts of ammo just from that making me jump, and reflex shoot.
scores a 20/10 for the first game in ages that's freaked me out...
shame i've only got a 9200se... i was playing around with spawning some of the bosses... framerate goes from 40fps down to about 2fps... but they look REALLY cool... and they're damn hard to kill... took 30 BFG rounds, and was still standing... mummy...

using the final version of that mod (on page 15), i only got a few more (welcome!) fps .. i think it's more effective on the X800.

Same card as mine :D. Reading your post just reminded me I hadn't checked my card to see if it is moddable.
At a quick glance, my GPU cooler's fan has black plastic centre-pole push-pins, and the memory chips are Hynix HY5DU283222A F-28 batch 411A! So without actually taking off the GPU cooler and checking the chip itself (which I'm not eager to do just yet), there's a good chance I might actually have a soft moddable R360 core.
W00t! :woot Might be able to make myself a cheap upgrade soon.

all you need is this dude:
http://atitool.ocfaq.com/
install that, go to settings->misc->dump bios
which will be in it's program files dir. then open that file in a text editor and near the top will be either r350 or r360 ..

Actually from what I've been reading, just because your card has an R350 BIOS doesn't mean that it is only an R350 core.Manufacturers are shipping R360 cores FLASHED down to having R350 BIOS's and selling them as a 9800 pro. This is what the soft-mod is all about.
If you are lucky enough to have a 9800 pro with a R360 core, you can flash the BIOS up to be a proper R360 (XT) BIOS. Flashing an R350 with an R360 BIOS apparently works too, but will usually result in artifacts and instability.
Apparently, the only way to be sure is to manually remove heat sink and clean the core to see if it has R360 printed on it. And even then, it is suggested that before trying to flash the BIOS, you try to overclock to 412/365 and test to be sure it can operate at an XT's proper clock speed.
Here's a couple of guides and stuff:
Finding an R360 core (http://www.rojakpot.com/default.aspx?location=3&var1=92&var2=0) (Excellent Guide, make sure to look through all the relevant pages in the article)

PCI express wont be coming to athlon XP but according to Anandtech (http://www.anandtech.com/mb/showdoc.aspx?i=2075&p=2)
Nvidia will have a chipset fairly soon, as will other brands (sis, via).
"The big question with PCI-Express for nVidia is: "When?" nVidia said that we may see their new PCI-Express boards for Athlon 64 as early as September or as late as 4th quarter. It all depends on how fast the market accepts PCI Express."
