If your about to get a pc, hold off, intel price drop in 2 weeks, 2.8 will be the minimum!

Moo

why they dropping?

Fark that - AMD's the way! Why pay more for something the same, and is misleading in their speed measurements? They're probably coming down cos AMD is awesome and is giving them a run for their money.

Who's misleading? The 3200+ is the biggest jump between actual clock and labled clock and comes NO WHERE NEAR the 3.2C. Pffft to AMD and their nastyness!

I've always wondered why AMD labeled their processors using nasty evil numbers, and not GHz'age. Someone smeshplain, plz omg bbq?

Moo

because if they give them pentium ratings they get sued again

Joshu

GHz is patented? God, I'll have to remember to warn all the people who make cordless phones to put all their specs into MHz. :/

Moo

no. but the unwashed masses do shit like see the 2 numbers and go 'derrr..... biga numba meen fasta fasta things done. i can open the 'extend my penis size' emails quicker.'

i mean, gees. these are the ppl that bitch about so much spam yet go thrui and open them and then CLCIK THE LINKS IN THEM, yet wonder why they get 300 spams in 12 hours. and also think bonzi buddy is cute and gator is great and that the atomic clock sinkronization is the shiznit

and i just realizled im ip at 7:30 in the morning....

..... and i didnt shit the bed.

so why should we hold off..
most people arn;t dumbenough to look at p4's
and those that are, they need to hold off so they have a bit of time for some fucking intelligence to sink in!

The PR rating is not Ghz.

thats as stupid as saying that speed is reletive to the clock speed.

I take it you use a P4 from that intelligent comment.
fag!

Yeah, but it's better that a dual XP200+!

+ Intel rock mah cock, they price drop came in early, you can get a 3.0c for about $340! Bargain!

I use an AMD, cvt (2600+, in fact.), but I have little clue on how processor speeds are determined -- although I thought it was CPU FSB * multiplier. Thus 166 * 11.5 = 1909 = 1.86GHz? Which makes me wonder why they market it as "2600+"?

cvt
03-02-2004, 05:43 PM
1600+ is a model number, its called deceipt.
clock speed is calculated by fsb * multiplier.

the reason for the weird model numbers was the first thunderbird CPU's

900mhz, 1000mhz, 1200Mhz, 1333Mhz, 1400Mhz, them ones the tbird a/b (shit cpu's, ran warm (bit warmer than the p4 counterparts) BUT came with very in adiquate hsf's, thats where the "hot amd" story's came from.
the tbird b and c were the first AMD to compete with intel (except for the 486 amd's, which had a 66Mhz bus on a 66Mhz chip, they left the intels for dead)
they then released the first palomino's, and the 1400+ was to say it performed the same as the old tbird 1400Mhz.
because the 1400 tbird was pretty kuch same performance as intel 1.4ghz, thats where the misconceptioopn of it being the "p4 equivilent" came from.
they never dumped the stupid model number idea, its well overdue.

cpu speed has nothing at all to do with clock speed.
it haves to do with instructions, clocks per cycle, and much more.

for a quick explenation of why clock speed has nothing to do with performance.

you know how important instructions are already, we all know AMD haves better gaming related instructions, and the P4 image/movie instructions.

secondly.
the AMD go for lots of data done in less clock cylcles (more parallel data)
the Intel go for thin channel of data (less parallel) and to perform the same throw the clock speed up, but they can do that, because the cpu works easier, less processing, less heat, so more clocks possible.
the amd works on more processing, more heat, less clocks required, and less possible.

to understand, you need to be seriously into electronics, and not just a nerdy computer user.

If u like intel, go for it, I just bag intel/nvidia users cos they get so serious about it :)
tintel have there placed, so do AMD."
intel for what I do, not only perform worse, cost more.
if you live in photoshop, p4 will perform better than amd, and be cheaper per performance. (why I got a p4 notebook).

if you wanna know more, I ahve about 2 feet thick nof books from my microcontroller study you can read thru :)

and for history, its exactly that ;)

Isn't that Instructions Per Cycle?

And what's wrong with nVidia? There's nothing wrong with them, and I've seen plenty of ATI cards render games really crappily (ever seen a Radeon9200SE run Savage? It's playable, but looks CRAP.) If I had the money to go buy a top-end GPU, I'd buy a 9800, only because I've heard shit about the FX series being fuckord.

By the way, how do those FXs perform?

cvt
03-02-2004, 06:16 PM
err.. yes.
but I was talking more layman talk, and also talking about its pipes, and processing and all the shit in general, and not just the clocks needed for a single instruction.
but what ya know is all ya need to know ;)

nah, nvidia';s cheap ones are better than ATi's cheap ones, like 9200se, I'd go the nvidia counterpart before that, infact, if you are a low res gamer (1024) nvidia are way better.
1280, not much in it
1600, ati are better.

I dunno how the n and r chips work, I just seen em working and and know what they do ;)
if u only run linux, ati ain't sorted there drivers yet (ati once had the worst drivers seen on the face of the earth... that now goes to promise and broadcom). otherwise as a high res gamer, ati run cooler, and do better with AA and high res.

its more a holden/ford thing that anything, a nvidia fan will never say ati's good, and vice versa, and some arn;t blided by brands and history, and can see the facts.

They outta make a universal way of measuring the speeds so not to confuse simpletons like me. And change the hard drive marketing bullshit... When I pay for 80GB, I expect 80GB.

cvt
03-02-2004, 11:18 PM
they do have a universal way of mesuring speeds.
its called a PR (performance Rating) but AMD used it and Intel sued them cos they own it.
the only other thing is benchmarks, but if amd lose, they say its intel rigged, and if intel l,ose they say its amd rigged, so they don;t get the credit they deserve.

you get 80gig raw
its that shit thing called a "file system" screwing ya.

I agree its dodgy tho.
when I get 120, I'd like 120, not 111 :(

FARK I hate explaining shit..
from now on I'm being a fucking whinger.

FUCK SOUNDBLASTER... FUCK YOU AUDIGY.

so the 120 gig drive werking out to be a 111gig drive (fking WD!)
, is there a file system that DOESNT steal teh 9 gig of valueable valueable pron space then?

the CPU speed-ige thing before..... you think it works great with comparing the intel and amd processors......then pop in the motorola/RISC cpus *pop*

Your turn to explain man :p
I want full explanbation of comparisions of

RISC, x86, ARM, xScale, sARM, CISC, ia64

cvt: I thought it was that PR didn't get widespread enough, and it was a system-wide measurement, and computer traders measured it in optimum conditions to advertise it as that.

The loss of hard drive space has nothing to do with the operating system. It's just labling, an what they consider a mb.

Tell my why:

((10^6)/(2^20)) * Labled HDD Size = HDD Size in windows.

I know why, simple, there is ya answer.

radass
04-02-2004, 01:31 AM
just use a few well written games and benchmark the cpu. what else matters ..

and for clarification ...

a byte is a number, from 0-255 inclusive
A kilobyte = 1024 bytes.
A (Real) Megabyte is 1024 killobytes, or 1,048,576 bytes.

however, a MARKETING megabyte is 1,000,000 bytes.

so, i can make a device that can store 4,000,000 bytes, and sell it as a 4 MB device. however 4 real megabytes would have been 4,194,304 bytes, so really we are losing out on 194KB of space in the conversion. And that's only over 4MB!!

Oh, and windows reports space in real megabytes

cvt
04-02-2004, 01:55 AM

fark, to several things.

I swear I must be overtired, or maybe playing that CS has really lowered my inteligence.
i was referring to "lost disk space", as in, disk space used and actual file size.
then I used an example totally wrong, never bothered loomking into it, so thought windows reported an estimated usable space, just lookmed then...
spose I should stand corrected and all, but thats not me... a better way would be simply to state your sexual prefrence in public.

YOUR GAY!

Moo

Yeah... NTFS uses some shit like 4KB blocks, don't it? Thus if you have 1000 2-byte files, you're essentially using 4000KB? IMHO, that's sort of crap.

Moo

well i actually looked at the top of one of my HDDs... shoulda done it when this topic came up, not hard, its in an external case..... anyhows, its a Seagate Barracuda ST340014a ..... on the top, it reads EXACTLY:

Barracuda 70\200.7
40 Gbytes

Model ST340014a

...and so on.

So they state Gbytes. 40 of em. not 40,000,000,000 Bytes.
so it should come up as 40 GB under micro$lag.

okay ppl... plz list ur seagate drives and model numbers and amounts........ i reakon i could goto the ACCC with this shit and get it ironed out

Joshu
09-02-2004, 04:44 PM
I've got the same model as you, Moo, so it doesn't matter.

NTFS formatted, reads as having 37.2GB total space, or 40,007,729,152 bytes. Thus leading me to believe that it's the FS.

NTFS disk is symbolically divided into two parts. The first 12% of the disk are assigned to so-called MFT area - the space which MFT metafile grows into. Any data recording into this area is impossible. The MFT-area is always kept empty not to let the most important service file (MFT) be fragmented at growth. The rest 88% of the disks represent usual space for files storage.

http://www.digit-life.com/articles/ntfs/image001.gif

Thus...

40,007,729,152 bytes / 88% * 100% = 45463328581.81 = 42.34GB

But. Disk free space however includes all physically free space - free pieces of MFT-area are included there too. Thus, it's probably dead on 40GB. As advertised.

kyzen
09-02-2004, 04:56 PM
LOL, yeah, it's an on going battle, can't believe you guys just found this out! :P

That's bs Joshu, thus... your a homo ;)

It's not the os... it's not the fs... it's not emps mum... It's simple labelling, don't look for something that's not there.

HDD manufacturers are labeling them wrong, they call a gb
10^9, everyone else on the planet call's it 2^30.

SO, here's a little experiment for you:
((2^30)/(10^9)) * HDD Label = SPACE SHOW IN WINDOWS!!!

SEE, look at the photo!

((2^30)/(10^9)) * 200 = 186!!!

There is THE answer, no magical conspiricy fairies to be seen, it's just the HDD manufactures making up their own value for the GB unit!!! It is being "looked at" but it has been "looked at" for as long as I remember and still nothing has been done, it's not that much of a big deal :) Just another fucking marketing ploy that we have to live with.
