Windows Media Player Probs

hey guys, im using wmp10 and the other day i noticed the episode of family guy was only playing at prolly 10fps, compared to the 27 odd it should be. i shrugged it off, but the next day while listening to some mp3s, it was 'skipping' and this really pissed me off.
i opened up the system usage tab in the task manager and simply having wmp open pushed my cpu usage from zero when it was idle to about 65 - 70%. listening to mp3s, it hits 95% and videos 100%.

i dont have that problem with any other media player. i've tried reinstalling, rolling back to media player 9, reinstalling codecs, but i cant find anything that would be causing the problem.

yeah, if you think of something that might help, let me know :)

simple solution, use winamp for mp3s and media player classic for vids...

i totally agree with bignick, there is no reason to be using WMP when there are better alternitives. that are less bloated and seem to work better in general...

EDIT: as bignick said, Winamp, and MPC. cant go past them :)

Generally speaking Dom, when a problem like that occurs it may have a little to do with an unfound exploit with in WMP, or a memory leak...
I'd be more inclined to use Winamp for most media playback, except for WMA files. or alternatively,
VideoLAN player works as good as any, includes more reliable working codecs too...
the other alternative is DivX or XviD to play back your video's, assuming there.avi, .mpeg, vcd or SVCD etc etc... you get the point...

sorry to post randomly, i notice blakes post with his words of wisdom have dissapeard... let that be a lesson to him...
i just remembered dom, there are WMA codecs or pulg in's for winamp i'm sure that may or maynot fix your play back issue with WMP...
alternativley defrag your HDD hehehe you'd be surprised...

I'd actually suggest deleting all the .ax files in C:\windows\system32, running a windows repair off your winxp install CD to restore the default windows codecs, then installing codecs as you need them (Koepi's XViD binary should take care of a LOT of media).

i dont see why you all pay out wmp... like, its not that bad! infact, i prefer it over any other media player. it has awesome library navigation, with the right codecs plays everything, and before i had this problem has never fucked up on me...

You know that's a moot point, when you've got the attached.

Global hotkeys + zero onscreen presence = windows media player can sit in the "let's not bother" bin.

nah, i dont have a xp cd, so i'll have to make do with winamp until i find one.

but in reply to your find thingy, i usually dont know exactly what i want to listen to, so i browse. winamps browsing logic sucks.

Seconded... Winamp crashes my computer when i try to load my songs into a playlist. I like media player, never had any problems with it... Dominatrix... have you tried the microsoft website (yes. I know. Microsoft Help Sucks. But hey, it can't hurt to take a look... i'll see what i can dig up.)

...Why? Why not migrate to the beautifully efficient peice of software, Media Player Classic? It's faster, less bloated, and will play just about any video format if you've got the codecs installed. You suck.
