I have a 6600GT 128Mb TurboForce. But want to update, it ain't cutting it anymore. :mad

Anyway, I am looking at either:

- XFX 7900GT 256Mb 560Mhz Core Clock 1.65Ghz Memory Clock
- XpertVision 6800GS 512Mb 425Mhz Core Clock 1Ghz Mem Clock

Has anyone got these cards, what do you think of them?

Aphex

man, the 7800 series rocks... in your case the 7900

i have twin 7800GT's and they are teh shit!!!

although the 7900GT not being much diff in design and architecture i'd take that in a heart beat, the 6xxx series is simply falling off the map as far as performance goes...

i think you can pick up a good 7800GT at a sweet price www.pccasegear.com has now a good selection of vid cards worth looking at...

cant cha do that with 2x 6600gt's in sli?

on another note what do peeps think of the 7900gt from Asus?

meh...

there all good...

the 7xxx is a real winner in my books... i'd grab one if i didn't already have 2x 7800Gt's
but money for performance is great... $500 for a kick arse vid card... can't go wrong...

so put 2x in a computer and have 8 screens with all 8 accelerated :)

as for new graphics cards, great way to waste money...
I'm sticking to the slow arse downgrade I did till something decent shows up, drivers mature, sli-xfire mature and can be compared.
atm, if ya want a single card, get a 7xxx, if ya want to go crazy, just wait off a bit.

from what i have been reading the new ati card 1900 offers better image quality than the nvidia counterparts, yet scores similar in benchmarks, so the ati is the great for image quality, they are also the first to offer HDR and AA in oblivion. dont get me wrong i would love either :D but this thread has been pretty one sided ;)

na it would just be 4 screens..........

matrox is a bit old hat when it comes to newer games,,,,

MR_PEA.. a "bit" old hat... haha, thats one way of syaing it :P
Best CAD cards!

Peter, I definately agree with you on that one, but he's not looking at top end cards...
for the not so high end, the 7xxx are better priced per performance.
Unless he's specifically wanting a card for future xfire/sli, xfire promises to be better, but neither are matured, especially xfire, so its too early to say.

nvidia and ati ever since 9700/geforece4 have been extremely close, and unless image quality/dual screen/retro games have been a concern, its personal opinion, and all other arguments are basically, baseless.

many people (most unfortunately) are bound by brand name, and will refuse to use any other.

But since ya brought it up, if cost isn't a concern, and single card is all yer after, x1900xtx is the best choice.

Peter
11-04-2006, 06:39 PM
yeah definately. there are some pretty cheap 7800's on the market. and given price concerns i would go the nvidia. but if i had lots of money i would def go ati :)

X-ZemPt
11-04-2006, 11:22 PM
I ain't going with no ati shit. Also I ain't going with the Asus 7900, the XFX has faster clock and memery speeds. Plus I don't think much of Asus anyway.

The 7900's are cheaper, just harder to get.

harder to get??? maybe you havn't been looking hardenough? www.pccasegear.com easy!!!

cvt your right Sli, Xfire are all over rated, i think Asus was on to something with those dual GPU core based cards... Dual GPU 7800GT's... all anyone will ever need...

with all the problems i have had with XFX... i'm more inclined to deal with a genuine Ati card next time... i have always been a fan of both...

for Ati anything below X1800 blows... anything below X850XT blows... any cut down card blows...

the 7900, and X1900 have very little difference, Ati "supposedly" hold the performance crown so far... not to get into a debate, get yourself an ATi for sure!!!

Yes. But that is not the one I am after. I am after the one with the higher clock and mem speeds. Plus, everywhere, thay are all on backorder.

thats just silly, it means you fuck yourself over when ATi come out with a better product... your problem/waste i guess. its not like either are bad, its just that ATi have a SLIGHT edge at the moment.

you know i was kidding about that asus vid card...

nVidia, if you choose to be with them is all good... and if you want a vid card now then grab your self a 7800GT... there exactly the same... the 7900 dosn;t have anything over the 78xx series... especially when the archetechture isn't different at all... same amount of pipes, RAM, etc etc...
or the other chioce is x1900 or x1800XT or something similar...

Why get a 7800? When a 7900 is cheaper and the GT has faster speeds than the 7800GT.

You died how many years ago???
and why the fuck did you come back :(

X-ZemPt from IntelligEncE
Atleast your sticking to AMD's and Nvidia little signed up deal...
Intel took on ATi, and I still see no point in either of them..

it hasn't influenced people, and your still stuck to a single brand...
why not Intel, afterall.. fanboys are meant to have a Intel, Nvidia, and Gigabyte or Asus mobo, why select good quality gear, yet refuse to look at the other major player in 3d acceleration?
or was it just luck you ended up with a 1/2 decent system?

i wouldn't have said there basically the same card without havnig some knowledge behind it... 7900GT yeah has a slightly faster clock rate...
but if your one of those people who are all about Mhz and Ghz... then go for the faster one!!!

u sure that there is nothing better then a matrox card for cad programs?
i know that they were the shit in 2-D graphics a few years back but surely it should of been overtaken by now?

cvt
13-04-2006, 01:50 AM
Overtaken by who?
Nv and Ati only care about the big quick money... Games
Although both nVidia and ATi have good cards for CAD, but the Matrox is still the winner.
and CAD is quite unrelated to 2D, almost all CAD apps are DirectX.

Matrox's real power is with there multi screen support, they are honestly out there with no competiton...
The abilites of, ones like the QID Pro and Parhelia, which are off the shelf items, are simply stunning what they can do.. in multiscreen uses, it makes ATi and nVidia look like something from 10 years ago.

funny to compare the Quadro, and FireGL cards from nV and Ati against a true pro with multi screen functions, especially in Auto CAD and numorious others in performance etc, when i did my diploma at the acadmey of intereactive entertainment, we used massive screens that had to be capable of huge res, and that 3d Studio max prog really can push a comp and it's grpahic abilities to the max... Matrox for anyone who users them should be laughing!!!

Parhelia HR?
indeed an awsome card.. if I could have enough $$ to have a screen that used that res that would be my card :P

that's card i'm quite sure we used with those machines we used...
I currently know someone who owns one perosnally.. he works for the snowy Hydro power authority, and he's an Auto CAD professional, does blue print constructions of turbines and motors etc..

2x 21" LCD monitors, with a very expensive "something" mouse designed for cad drafters... almost a picture worth needing to take!!!

parheliaHR is same specs but the Higher res and uses a 64bit bus.
I never seen one in action....
I seen the Parhelia in action with 3 screens before, 3x 21" (CRT) @ 1600res each and solidworks spread over all 3, thats I think the only one I ever seen being used to its potential, and that was quite some time ago.
no fancy cad tablet tho :(
although I see them used in singlehead quite often, there rare to see eh.

Peter
13-04-2006, 07:56 PM
i know what i want :) pity about the res though...
The maximum resolution supported by the device is 3840x1024, which is three lots of 1280x1024 - unfortunately, no 1600x1200 support here.
