me and pete were talkin about this a few lans ago, oil being a non-conductive liquid perfect for cooling, i would want maybe 1 fan in the middle to move things around abit. only downside, it would be pretty heavy. and the PSU would be pretty hard to do.

Fkn... HEAVY IS AN UNDERSTATEMENT!!!
some of those rigs with all the HDDs in em are already hard enough to lift.

Add (was it 8 gallons?) of that shit! fuck!

Was that a video they had for sale, or like... what? Step by Step instructions there? coundnt see any :(

Either way... Someone should try it (heh, like who has the money these days?)

well, i mean... wouldnt be all that much money. but what i wanna know is how they sealed up the external motherboard connections! they didnt use silicone or anything on the outside...

30L, prolly a bit over 30 extra kg. so yeah, that would be fucking heavy :P

was an interesting read, they do some good shit at THG. wish i had that kind of money to spend on computers :(

i wonder how it would last over a longer scale.. ie one year??

would adding a UV reactive dye fuck up the non-conductiveness of the oil? cos that would look pretty damn sweet.

I'm amazed that this works... We discussed it a while ago, Biggie, but with regular water (and the components being shrink wrapped :)).

It would be great for servers, but I doubt even my buldging muscles could be bothered carting that around to LANs :P.

quite simply if you had high end gear to waste drowning in oil, then go ahead, i think i'll stay with the regular methods of cooling...
but as mentioned above it does make you think, i mean far from conventional cooling by anymeans... but cool to see it work...
i might drown one of my many P3's in oil and see what happens for kicks hehehe

Yeah, I'm not going to dunk my 'puter in oil just yet ;). It would make working on the computer too much of a bitch! But how long 'til we see motherboards coming encased in a liquid coffin, out of the box? :).

a long time, as you need a large volume of oil for it to be worth doing, as the oil will heat up. :)

still a pretty cool idea i suppose you could put some pumps threw some massive radiators to help disperse some of the heat, as it could build up patentually. still pretty interesting

but for now i think ill stick to good old air cooling :)

yeah air cooling does the job just fine

Liquid Sapphire!!! (aka Novec1230)
Much better choise, if I can get my hands on the shit affordably I WILL be doing that!

oil as a fact is not that good at conductig heat, specially compared to novec1230.. and if you use the wrong oil, some are conductive...
