Hi Guys,

It's time we sat down and had a talk about the facts of life! I think there was a bee or something, and a bird, alcohol was involved, one thing lead to another... there was!

But seriously lovies, I'm here to talk to you about LANX and the way things are going with the event :) We need your support to keep going strong and keep LANX at the age old price of $25! You wanted more room, we gave it to you in the in the shape of a double basket ball court, but with the larger size has come extra cost. The reality of the situation is that the new venue costs twice as much as the other venue, and if we don't get numbers up into the 80-100 mark, one of three things are going to happen, 1) there will be a price increase to pass the cost on to you guys (god forbid), 2) we will find a smaller venue which will inevitably end up as cramped as the uni 3) LANX get's shit canned, me and spot reclaim our weekends and... go fishing or something. (more likely have a 2 player LAN at my house :P)

Now! When we were at the uni we were booking out very quickly, 3 days was the record! But when we moved to Damascus the booking fell away and we didn't get the numbers we normally do. So what happened lovies? I'm trying to figure our the cause of the decline, but need your help! So I'm opening the floor to theories to the cause of the decline and suggestions to remedy the situation, let us know what we can do to force you to respawn at LANX!

well..... i think the decline may have to do with the new venue being damascus. everyone new LANX for its UNI-ness, which is a venue i REALLY like. i thought the uni was hella awesome. lots of place to sleep (pfffft who sleeps at a lan :)) i dont know really, i just liked it. the castle also isnt too bad of a venue.

but of course we need to give it another go? maybe turnout will increase

maybe people were just waiting for a lan to pass in the new venue and find out how it was from the people that went

but yeah, wtfs going on, i remember trying to book for 12 and 13 and it was a fluke if you could get 2 seats next to each other.

Its clearly a common problem with the lanning scene as it is.

I still dont know if people are scared to come after what happend to us that one time, but we all know that there is no problem with "the man" as it was.

I know part of the problem that we are sufferung from was the amount of small lans that cropped up around the place and quicly died. The down side to that has been that alot of new laners have had a shitty 1st experience. That said there is no reason other than the change of venue and size that has changed at X.

Neither do I. There's really no simple way, except for people to ask people who aren't directly affiliated with the LAN.

I reckon piracy is more a perceived problem than a real problem at the moment. Just wait til LANs start appearing on A Current Affair, then we've got something to worry about.

Hey guys, I'll address a few points now :)



The UNI... Good old Ballarat Uni... never going there again. They are trying to get $1579.60 out of us for internet use during one of the lans we had there while sponsored! They decided that we used "more than needed" or some shit... but you can't say to someone after being sponsored for A YEAR "sorry, deal changed, we changed our mind after the fact, so you have to now pay for something you thought was sponsored". It's not just wrong it's ILLEGAL! I just have to get around to taking them to the civil and administrative tribunal and get it sorted out once and for all. But still, BU isn't an option to us. Don't know if you're aware but they held us to ransom last time we were there. After everything was set up and booked in, they rang the week before and said "pay up for we won't let you run your event", who in their right mind would want to deal with people like that...



I think the new venue is great! Seriously dudes that didn't come to the last one... having that much space at our disposal is awesome! When we wanted to stretch our legs we went and played baseball, basket ball, footy etc on the other court. You could also have people walking between the isles behind you without being able to tell if they were male or female without looking... I think the cafe brings more of a social aspect to it as well, yes you can't eat over your computer, whooptie doo! It's not that big of a deal to take a meal break. I mean we should have banned it from X the second me and spots computers got splashed with coke. We've had a few accidents in the past, seriously guys, food and drink and computers are a bad mix.



So in closing:

I have a dream, that one day X will fill up and we'll have the aweXome lan ever, cause we all know big lans rock! ;) People who say little lans are better are like people who say "it's not what you have, it's how you use it", to make themselves feel better about... the cards they were delt :homo

well i dont reckon that LANX has been quite as good since it left the uni. the uni really was a great venue, it was good for lanning and it just had a nice feel about the place wheres with damascus just feels to big and open. with damascus it feels like theres half a dozen people having a lan in the middle of a basket ball court but at the uni with it being constantly a full house it didnt feel quite so exposed.
that said ill still be comming to the next x but in my opinion a smaller venue would be better.

Nag your friends, bring people who have never LANed before, and just get behind and support em! I personally believe it could REALLY work at Damascus if they got around 100 people there! i think more needs to be done by the lanners. particularly ones who go to school. put something about lanx in your school newsletter or make posters and put them up around the school. tell people how fucking awesome it is and how you wouldnt miss it for the fucking world!

But Big LANs are more intense during the comps... c'mon, I know I will never forget our team vs the Admins at Swat 4 in the grand final... we were 3 behind with 30 seconds remaining, I drilled 2 dudes, and then with quite litterally less than a second remaining our worst player - the guy who did nothing but team kill in every other game, ARRESTED KYZEN (and earned mass praise and mass offers of anal sex form all members of the team)! You don't get that kinda intensity at small LANs

How about this then guys, we have a 50 or so player lan every 6 weeks (Sat, Sun only), and a big
one at the start of the year, and half way through the year (3 Dayer) as a bit of a fund raiser, cause
god knows we need it! We want to get more servers and our own power distribution gear, but like
everything to do with lanning, the shit is expensive!

So in that case! We need a new smallish venue, I've been looking... but what I thought would be simple
turns out to be quite crap. I'm sure there are hall our there that I haven't been able to find, so I think the
best idea would be to recruit the help of you guys! You guys know the community, I'm sure some of you
have been to scouts, had sisters in brownies, or did some other hall related activity... or something :p

Your Mission Lanners (If you choose to accept it), is to find LANX a new home, for all nerd kind!

Requirements:

1 Hall with the following properties
Approx 12m x 12m open space (with stage) or 12m x 15m (with out stage) stage is preferred
Toilet for pooping and the like
Kitchen for Dave to do his thang
1 x 32A 3 phase plug, or at least access to 4-5 20A circuits (3 phase preferred)
30 tables (standard 6" trestle, or similar)
60 chairs (comfy preferred for bums)
Seclusion (to stop curious walkers by wandering in) and parking (for cars) would be lovely

Separate area for console'ing/snoozing would be awesome!

The person who brings me the info that leads to a permanent home for LANX will get...

Ballarat's a pretty big sized place, there has to be something like this around? What I'm
describing is pretty much the bunny town hall, but with less water and less collapsing
tables. If any of you know of a hall in or very close to Ballarat let us know! We would
also be interested in working with another incorporated association if they have something
close to what we want, but would need some upgrades so the venue would suit us.
I'm sure we'd get a few volunteers for a working bee to upgrade their facilities! A few of
you may even have tradesmen fathers like sparkies or chippies that you could ask and see
if they were interested in donating some time to the cause!

I am looking around for potential sites but having trouble finding that 3phase. I know the security it gives you much easier to work with.

Church Halls wouldn't really work would they, kinda clash on sunday morning, apart from that have possible options. but all depands on our ability to cope with hearing crap music at 9:30 in the morning.
