now iv been thinking of making a media player/center out of an xbox. i was planing on using either XBMC or Gentoox Media Center Edition. i saw in the Why did you buy your xbox? thread that atleast 5 of you have/had one as a media player so im just asking for any tips/ ideas/ susgestions/ dos/ don'ts that any of you might have.

xbox
+ mod (alladin is fine)
+ hdd (not needed, but awsome to have)
+ XBMC (my choice, mythtv with gentoox works, but xbmc does the same and loads much faster!, mythtv also alowsdvd ripping, but is slow as buggery (xbox = 733 celery))
+ network cable (optional, hdd can store movies)

Streams music and movies perfect from netbios (windows file sharing)

pretty hard!

These day CVT you don't even need to put mod chips in, you can just soft-mod them and they work fine

Lucifer..

Softmodding is dangerous, and also plain stupid...

why?
it uses an audio hack, you need origional copy of 007 agent under fire, and a action replay.. AND a memory card.. i mean damn!!!
even one of those is dearer and a $25 modchip and $0.10c of wire..
and after all that screwing around, its just as quick to rip it apart and solder, plus then you got a better mod anyway.

Me, and everyone I know did upgrades from $50 - $80, now think about it.. is it really worth buying all that crap you'll never use?

audio hack? yeah you could do it that way, or you could use a save game to exploit the stack overflow errors in games like Mechassault (one of the first games which allowed people to mod xboxes), flash the bios, install a custom bios and install the needed dashboard. The good thing about that is, that you can just as easily reverse it, this soft mod option takes bugger all time to do, and it will save you money. So there. Use the money that you save from modding one, to buy a newer hard drive for your Xbox, getting them installed is a damn sight cheaper than anything else.

modchipped me xbox, put a big HDD in it, put XBMC on it and now its a fucking awsome media center thingy. as a media center hooked up to the TV it just seems to suit perfectly, its great for all ya muzic and movies and any other shit ya wanna watch :D
