View Full Version : America's biggest Anti-Video Game fanatic's website.

After reading Tim Buckley's most recent artical on www.crtlaltdel-online.com about video game violence I decided to have a look at the other side; the anti gaming fanatics in the US whom are taken so seriously that they actually appear in parliment (congress) to say their peice, and infact, the issue of gaming ratings and censorship has actually become a key election issue for some politicials.
In this thread I have a few questions I'd like to put forward to you.
First up, have a look at http://www.stopkill.com/
Aside from the god aweful pregenerated HTML/JavaScript nature of the site (proof: "<!--COMMENT="This site was generated by WebSiteNOW!(TM) © 2000, Inabox, Inc. Inabox, WebSiteNOW!(TM), trademarks of Inabox Inc."-->") what reaches out an smacks you in the face?
Perhaps it was the whopping great big ad at the top of the page?
So, question the first: If you had an "cause" that you wanted to dedicate your life to persueing, would you make a website with a massive and totally unrelated ad on it solely because you wanted to make money from hits?
Personally, I think that ad speaks volumes about Mr. Jack Thompson. He doesn't want to save the children and bring about world peace and universal love by flying games developers alive, all he wants is a nice big pile on $100 notes to sleep on at night.
Next question: Have you ever commited a serious violent act soon after playing a game?
I don't mean bitch slapping your brother for giving you cheek, I mean something that got the police involved. Something that would serve as proof that anybody that has played Manhunt of GTA is doomed to be the next Martain Briant (re: Port Auther for those that don't remember.)
And finally, what do you think of the rating system here in Australia and how it is enforced?
Should developers be held responcible for under aged children playing their games even they did not sell the game in the first place (the store did, not the developer)?
Should developers be held responcible for mods and hacks that fans and amature developers release? (If so, why?)
I'll answer most of my own question later, at the risk of further editorialising I think I'll end this post here :)
EDIT: This just HAD to be added :D

Arg. FUckwits.
In 1992, the American Civil Liberties Union named Jack Thompson one of its ten "Censors of the Year" for daring to suggest that Time Warner rapper Ice-T's "Cop Killer" should be pulled from store shelves worldwide. That award is a badge of honor Thompson wears proudly, not only because Time Warner did what he requested but because Thompson was ten years ahead of the national curve in predicting the entertainment-inspired copycat violence we are seeing from a generation raised on violence that Hollywood says is "cool."
I heard Ice T talk about this saturday night when he geust stared on RAGE.
The song 'cop killer' was in response to the rodney king beating and aquital of the 4 police officers (out of 20 there).
NOTE: The police officers that beat up rodney king didnt listen to that song before being on duty, or play GTA:SA or postal or anything.

Loki']god aweful pregenerated HTML/JavaScript... whopping great big ad... would you make a website with a massive and totally unrelated ad on it solely because you wanted to make money from hits?
I'd put an ad on my website because I want to cover the costs of all the hits it gets. The above point is really really moot. Take a look at the ads on other websites.
Loki']I think that ad speaks volumes about Mr. Jack Thompson.
Jack Thompson, master of domain name sales! Advertiser for all of the internet accessories you could ever want! Waffling on about these ads isn't going to prove anything.
Loki']Should developers be held responcible for under aged children playing their games even they did not sell the game in the first place (the store did, not the developer)?
Absolutely, it's their responsibility to advise the ratings board of all explicit content in their game.
Loki']Should developers be held responcible for mods and hacks that fans and amature developers release? (If so, why?)
Should black-market-gun-salesmen be held responsible for people having illegal weapons and illegally killing people?
LOL
Anyone know where the nearest ammunation is? I'm looking at buying an M4 and a deer-hunting rifle. If there's no ammunation near me, I'll drop into the army base and pick up a minigun, no biggie.

Good point Joshu, it is also the responsibility of the parents of the offended (or affected) children to ensure that they find out as much about a game as possible before buying it for their kids. I mean, a game like GTA:SA is a big no-no in my books for anyone under 15 (hell, I'd go a bit higher if our ratings system was a bit better) and there are plenty of games that would appeal to concerned parents, like platformers (Mario, Crash Bandicoot) and even racing games. Thats why they create RATINGS. It sickens me that gamers as a whole are scolded for this, when the blame should be placed on the parents or even the game distributors. Sorry if this doesn't make any sense, 4:00 am and need sleep

I think I was a little too ambiguous in my question. What I should have said is "If a game passes the censorship process with a rating of MA 15+ (Half Life 2 for example) and then a child aged 15 buys the game, who should be held responcible?" Because games stores and department stores sure as hell don't care what they sell to whom.
Should black-market-gun-salesmen be held responsible for people having illegal weapons and illegally killing people?
Well Rockstar are being held responcible for the patch that has been released without their concent for GTA:SA :)
As for the banner ad, I still think it heavily undermines the author's cause.
its the responsibility of noone..is all bullshit :P
explain why the most non-violent people are the ones that play 'violent video games'
and the most violent people are the ones that might be lucky to even have a playstation, and if they do, only play tony hawks , NBL, or other crap sims.

its because the stuff was already in the game, it just unlocked it.
i read a good point somewhere, what about 'the sims'? you can get patches to see the people naked in the shower and takin a piss. it was already in the game, and 'the sims' is PG(?)

You should have posted this here as a followup, it's beautiful.
I've heard that the sheer volume of email being sent to Jack "Hot Coffee" Thompson has shut down his email service.

Subject: You've opened my eyes!
Message:
You've opened my eyes, all right, at how idiotic people can be. People like you, who find scapegoats in the most trivial things like video games. It's very amusing how you claim that video games are training children to be killers - oh, I forgot: holding a game controller is a lot like holding a real weapon, indeed. Extremely realistic training, right there. I see how Manhunt will train me to put a plastic bag over someone's head and kill them - I had the bag upside-down before, thankfully they trained me to do it properly.
You go on to say that teens that have shot up their schools played video games, immediately focusing the blame on these "evil" companies that create our entertainment. This "evidence" that you think you have is largely flawed by the fact that most teenagers will have played video games. If they're as bad as you say they are, shouldn't school shootings be a daily event? Do you honestly think that the people who shoot up a school were perfectly normal in the head before they picked up that controller and played Grand Theft Auto? I doubt it.
It's fact that violence exists in every day life. Even the bible contains many, many stories of violence. Better ban that! People might start nailing their friends to crosses. You say "I am trying to protect our freedoms" - well, I believe we're free to play video games, and morons like you are free to sodomise yourself with retractable batons and hopefully injure yourselves fatally.
Your website has led me to the conclusion that you are an idiot. Please do the world a favour and do not, under any circumstances, reproduce. You may raise yet another narrow minded simpleton that enjoys telling us what we can and can't do. If you already have kids, please put them up for adoption: chances are that they'll get a foster home with a sane parent.
I play video games daily. Run for the hills, before I snap.

Best quote I've heard yet:
With Jack Thompson, you don't need the Hot Coffee mod to see a dick and an expossed ass.
