I'm having trouble with a mates computer....

He's running a p5gd1 mobo, and has 2 x 200gb ide hdd on the primary raid, setup as IDE, and they're running fine. Now, the problem I have is with the two cdrom drives (1 x 52x32x52x cdrw (asus) and 1 x dvd rw 16x8x16 (also asus). They are both connected up on the primary IDE slot, with the cdrw set as master, and the dvdrw set as slave.

I can boot from them no worries, but when i get into windows, they both show up in my computer, both can read, and tell me what cd is in the drive. With music cds, I can open up the files in winamp (it even recognises the filenames), but it only plays 1-2 seconds of each song, and that's without sound, then it skips onto the next song. With data cd's, I can open up files in notepad, but with executable files (exe) It takes ages, then comes up with a critical error, saying: "Only part of a ReadProcessMemory or WriteProcessMemory request was completed".

They can boot into windows xp setup when i select boot from cd... but yeah, they're stuffed when i get into windows... fucked if i can work out what is wrong with it :dead

I think the seedy roms are becoming deceased. Tryed other seedyroms in their place yet?

NINJA EDIT: Using the same IDE ribbon your your machine and in his? Cos i have had some of those not go for no apparent reason

first, try removing one of the drives, and see if it makes any difference.
also, as moo said, try another ide cable.
make sure he hasn't installed some exotic 'screw up my system' drivers for them.

also, whichever drivers are installed, go to device manager, and uninstall the driver and reboot

yep, done all that, also tested the cd + dvdrw in my comp, and they work fine... I dunno what's wrong with them... :S

It's always Mong's fault. I'm surprised he doesn't come here more often.

This isn't the only forum I do this on, you know...

every company has faults, asus are usually pretty good, but there bioses are far from good (remember back when I turned lee into a asus basher, the bad bios was my biggest complaint).
but all manufacturers do it at times, sometimes its hardware or firmware aswell..

some of the seagate barracuda 4 hdd's (yes, its a while ago) would not work as a master if it had a hdd slave.
it was fixable by a modified bios asus and abit got made for them, or flashing the hdd with the updated firmware, otherwise it was a permenant issue.

so it prolly woulda been fixable.. just not worth the hassle :P

yeah, i've always been a gigabyte man myself... but that's personal preference... my gigbyte mobo is 2 years old... even before sata days... and it's still running faultlessly...

hahahahahahahahahahahahah ahaha...
BUAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA HAHAHAHAHAHA

ohh...

yeh, ok......

But gigabyte are cheap- ya pay for what ya get
But there stable and gotmore features - stable is seen from a persons history with computers, and can be quite incorect, tho gigabyte do freak some rare good boards, the extra fetures are usually useless, and/or available on others aswell.
Then why are they most common? - Why, when one dumb sheep runs the wrong direction, do all the other dumb sheep follow?, price sells to the majority, quality sells to the intelligent.
Gigabyte have dual bios - yes, but have you ever flashed a bios and had a fail, and tried to rescue it.. when ya do, 80% chance the other is borked aswell... sales gimmick, good idea, badly implemented.
People have always told me to go gigabye - *refers to dumb sheep comment above

i wouldent use them as an OC board, only A-Bit have my favor for such things. i would use them as a stable board for Athlons..... wouldent touch them for Intel gear tho.

I have had very little to do with them..
although I finally have had the chance to scrutinize one (for only one day) but I did put it thru as much torture as I could in a few hours I had it.

They are surprisingly pretty good, I didn't get enough time to go right over it.
there overclocking seemed to be pretty stable, although the mosfets were getting very heated, which is a sign of a short lifetime of the motherboard when pumping more voltage into the cpu.
I didn;t push it too far (2.8ghz p4 -> 3.5ghz) before errors in p95 shown up, it hard locked above that.
the ic7-g got the same cpu (and still does) from 2.8Ghz -> 3.65Ghz before errors, and hard locks at 3.8 nowdays, and overall the mosfets were running much cooler.
the p4p800e deluxe by asus could only get that cpu to 3.35ghz.. so its definately a fair jump ahead of the average.
the bios was not as nice as abits, but was better than asus's, I didn't have the time to give it a thorough test, but other than the ugly colours, I am gonna have to get my hands on one and give it a propper test!!
I would still reccomend abit for a overclockers, the options, range, and tracks are still unouched by any others, but dfi are tackling it the right way, and for stock speeds, or mild overclocks (2.8 -> 3.0for example) they appear to do the job just fine.

but don;t take it as gospel.. that was a random board, first impression.. first impressions don't count :P

oh.. also, this board was not new, and came in, with a cooked PSU, so may have been damaged (but I don't beleive it was), and I can;t remember the model name.. I wrote it down somewhere :P
i never did any performance tests on it, so I don;t know what it scaled like.
