just bought my new computer, and when i try to boot it up, it comes up with this message "cannot find operating system" then i alt, ctrl, del it and it boots up no problems.
its not really urgent, but it'll be frustrating in boot up races and the like. anyone got any thought on why it may be happening?

Make sure there's no fuckups in C:\boot.ini - or format the drive and start fresh.

format teh MBR, use a startup Disk, i used win 98 one it works just as well, use fdisk utility
i had some linux dual boot issues and when i deleted linux (and GRUB :P) so all i had to do was fdisk/mbr and everythign was gravy and WinXP booted fine

ok, now i have another problem with another computer, i have an ECS KT600-A with a 2400+ in it, but the mobo is only detecting it at 1800+ and if i tinker with any of the voltage settings, the cmos needs to be wiped, and there is a very limited amount of jumpers on the motherboard.

ecs = gay, so im using it as a server. im not _that_ stupid that i buy a shitty brand like that for my gaming rig. gigabyte has never steered me wrong in the motherboard department

i'd say 9/10 dead / problematic motherboards i've seen were gigabyte

Just thought I'd throw in that the majority of "mainstream" computer users use gigabyte. I'd say 90% of the people I know use gigabyte. The reason I'm pointing this out is that if the majority of people use gigabyte then it makes sense that the majority of bung motherboards you've seen would be gigabyte.
Just my 2 cents

and ive had 5 computer with gigabyte motherboards, and this is the first problem ive had. and it was actually because i had a jumper on a western digital as a single drive, in which case i shouldnt have had one at all

i reakon Gigabyte are shit because, wait for it, THEY ARE PROBLEMATIC AND PERFORM LIKE SHIT! :)
i would rather spend the extra $200 and buy a mobo that will perform great and wont fuck up, which means i wont be having to replace parts for upgrades as often :D
dominatrix

well, as i also posted above, i havent personally had any problems with gigabyte, so i have no beef buying their parts. the one i have in my new system performs awesome, i just did a performance check in nv system utility, and its above the nvidia benchmarks, without overclocking it at all.

if you want features; gigabit LAN, SATA RAID, 8 channel audio etc... you will pay for them through the nose, but quite a bit less with a gigabyte motherboard

asus rule rock solid bitches
yet the fact is, most of you have only tried 2 or 3 brands, if that, and only one or 2 off's..
so it really comes down to none of you really do know what your on about.
ECS are shit
gigabyte are better... but still shit.
its funny how people go on about how damned good a gigabyte is, then they get a dfi, and then change there mind, and go on about how dfi are the best, then they get a msi, and woops, it was a dud, msi are the worst ever.
then also comes into it is a good P4 board may not be a good AMD board.
gigabyte have in the past had 'some' rare good boards.
as have had msi, like the PRO2 series, or the new k8 neo, and asrock/asus make nice mini p4 boards.
but no matter what you think, avoid ECS like the plague, anyways, this is my lastr time trying to explain things to people who are too arrogent (unknoledged) to listen.
because I know you won't...
Asus are most times very solid boards, bad overclocking, worse bios, worse layout
gigabyte have very little going for them except pretty gay colours
dfi are a overpriced, fair performing board, ok overclock, ok layout
msi are in a lot of cases unstable, low performing, but not badly layed out
ecs have nothing at all going for them
abit are very solid boards, and the most stable overclocked, excellent layout, but at stock speeds underperform slightly compared to asus/msi/dfi
asrock is a rebranded asus.
soltek are very solid boards, ok overclock, excellent layout
soyo are fairly solid boards, excellent layout, and most features of all
but like I said, every brand have freaks in either good or bad.
