yo, im just about to buy a new graphics card for my new rig. and i have noticed one thing about ebay...
you generally have a choice of 128mb/256bit or 256mb/128bit. throw in a few shitty brands and some dodgy sellers and it makes for quite a bit of fun ...
so, im thinking of gettin a fx5700 256mb/128bit and i wanna know if im better off with that or the other. (128mb/256bit)
ps, im not planning on upgrading for a while after i get this
pps, i need agp8x. not pci-e

well a 5700 isnt going to last you that long, it's only a mid range of the last generation of nvidias ..
forget the bits. Theses days, you pretty much want a 256MB card, although a 128MB card is ok _at_the_moment_
how much you spending ?

256meg is a waste on a 5700. your definately better off with 128meg/256bit. Bandwidth is more important than amount of memory. oh and are you sure you want a 5700? they don't run dx9 games very well at all so this card is not going to last very long at all. if you want longevity about the only agp choices are the 6600gt, 6800 or x800. 9800 pro is also ok if its 256bit mem
a rough comparison of dx9.0 performance: From the 3dmark05 ORB
highest 5700 ultra = 870 marks
6800s get about 3400 stock
6600gt get about 3200marks stock
x800s about 3400 stock

Does this mean you're selling your 9600XT? :)

well, the good spec 6600gt's, 6800 and x800's are a bit out of my price range, so would i be better off getting a 9700pro 128mb/256bit for $160 and then getting a 6800 or something a bit down the track?

9700 pro would go alright for a while, but if you want doom3 to look nice you should opt for a 256MB version. I have a 9800pro with 128MB and some more texture ram would have come in handy

yeah doom3 loves the texture ram, though for most games the extra ram doesn't come into play until you start doing 16xAA and 8XAF.
$160 is a decent price for a 9700pro go for it they get around 2200 marks in 3dmark05 stock so will last a lot longer than 5700 or 5900 would

Fuck a 5700, I've seen Nvidia 6600 GT's for $300 from Hong Kong. Get one of them.

the price diff between the 5700 256mb/128bit and the 9800 pro 128mb/256bit is only about $50 maybe $75 so in opinion you should look at the ATI series if your looking at getting a last gen card that's gonna last you a while too...
My 9800pro 128mb/256bit gets roughly 2600 on 3Dmark05
and a friends 5700 Ultra only get about 900 in the same bench mark and he payed about the same for the FX series card as i did for my 9800pro... it's really a question of what you want in a video card...

my ASUS (grrrr) 9600Xt does an alright job, runs Doom3 out right maxed (Except res= 1280x1224) runs pretty sweet except when 5 odd imps launch a fireball each
