3.4mb/s as in, if sustained throughout the entire download, i would've download 34mb. 340kb/s is pretty average on cable. i was downloading dcx in january last year. actually, i was probably considerably slower... maybe 2.8 or something but it was insane watching the progress graph

Dear everyone-who-does-not-understand-already:

1500/256 means "1500 kilobits per second download, 256 kilobits per second upload". A kilobit is 1024 bits, and a bit is a 0 or a 1.

A kiloBYTE is made of 1024 lots of 8 0s or 1s, therefore it is EIGHT times the size of a kiloBIT.

1500kiloBITS per second is the same as 187.5kiloBYTES per second.

radass, the Ncable cable modems with Ethernet or USB only about the maxium of 1mbps connection between them and the Computer thats how they have been setup, and the Ethernet might say 10mbps, but the modem only allows 1mbps transfer. I know I worked for them Thats how they do it.
3.4mbitsps is equal to 340Kbytes per second am I right? so on a USB modem 1mbitps connection would only allow 100kbytesps? so if you on USB how can you get 340kbytesps unless it connected wrong to the computer? with ethernet it would be 1000kbytesps am I correct. You cant get thoses speed on cable in ballarat you would average around 60k and maybe peak sometimes, if your getting faster speeds that means that you are connected and theres not many people on, or your on a node with not many people

As for my professional experince, I have Cert 3 in IT, I work for a Wireless Broadband Compnay, I worked for Ncable, I worked for the Uni of Ballarat and I am currently studying at the UNi of Ballarat.

Unless i'm very much mistaken there is no 1Mb mode supported by current ethernet hardware and joshu has well taken care of the usb figures. Why would cable modems behave mysterously slower in ballarat than everywhere else in the world ?

are you still using there old white modem? if you are, i think thats ya problem. My modem kept doing the same thing untill we got the new black one. just ring up NCable and bitch at them about it. eventually they'll give ya the new one

Besides, there's absolutely NO point in controlling the speed of the data (by setting the modem to use a mythical 1Mb/s ethernet or usb protocl, and expecting the pc to talk it too) from the modem to the pc, when you can control the rate of the data from your gateway to the modem.

Unless you are trying to say that the data is SHAPED to 1Mb from the modem to the pc, in which case i still dont see the point, unless this is the only way that they can actually control the speed of the modem's connection to ncable .. but then, how do they have 512Kbps plans if this is the case?

Just had a bit of a google and it seems that the line 'connection speed'is based on the tuner component of the modem, which can be set to use a variety of frequency ranges. This however, is totally separate from the ethernet / usb implementation used to pass the data back to the pc.

To be honest, for all your strutting about i'm not sure you really understand what you're talking about ...

i think what is being referred to here, is the modem dropping out frequently, and the old SB4100 modems are the fault, and the black ones are a newer model.

plus the servers r in america an not in austrailia, so with Ncable being a reseller of comindico, you are connecting to ncable servers, then to the comindico backbone in sydney then it is connecting to Melbourne Via the next backbone then from melbourne your onto NS1 the telstra backbone 139.130.4.5 (check ur ping to that, mines 21ms) then you are going across the pacific fibre connection to the West Coast USA which is 200ms then you connecting to there server, on my connection I get about 350-450ms latency in game on Eastern Time Servers a bit more on pacific, where what do you get?

Well all I know is that I Worked for Ncable, and they would program the modems to only allow 1mbit, 120mbit transfer rate between modem and computer (or maybe that was the servers but I was under the impression it was the Modems), but i dunno what the displayed connection speed was....

Maybe radass is right there programed to diffrent freqencys and thats there speed limiting...

All I know is when people get high speeds it means there is an error on the network cause ncable have set it up for no one to have speed of 256k so 30-40k max

You can telnet into those modems and change settings I know that.

But now I think of it as I was leaving Ncable there were implementing a new system. Heres a Question Ncable customers you have to log on when u first turn on your computer? Then you log onto the server and it has the connection speed in it, so there must be a flaw in that, maybe its no the modems, but I know for a Fact High Speeds on Ncable home users are mistakes and errors in the system consdiering they its 256k as quoted on there website.

But I will admit I am wrong about the Displayed connection speed between the Modem and the Computer in the bottom corner, I have never observed that, but people tell me that displays 1mbit.

But All i know is Ncable sucks... But Im probley wrong about that
