your joking right? ut was HUGE wasn't it. well every report to come out since as glorified q3a, it was MASSIVE!! there are still million doller competitions being run for the game, and mods like rocket arena still get played fairly heavly...
quake4, if its multiplayer is as playable as q3a - will go VERY far, and hopefully its not as horrible as d3 multi ~ which made me cry....

Part of Quake3's playability, I believe, came from (pretty much) everyone being able to run it - from the TNT2s up (probably even before that, I wasn't "hip" with computers back then). Same deal with Halflife and mods. They kept it simple stupid, even though they (well, HL) were revolutionary for their times, they had simple and effective graphics and engines.
Quake4 looks like it's got too complicated a graphics engine, and unless it's really scalable I don't think we'll see much of it at LANs. Think Doom3.

who said they will use content that taxes the engine as hard or harder than doom3 ? an engine is just a pipeline for content processing.
quake 3 ? well when it came out many people didnt have 3d hardware acceleration at all and had to get it, as it was the first game to not support software rendering. So no, pretty much everyone *couldnt* run it without an upgrade
As for UT, are people still buying the original ? I doubt it. people still buy half life one for counter strike. (and incidently, half life uses an upgraded quake 1 engine)

I would say doom3 is different because the majority of computers sold new can't even run it at at 1024x768 at good framerate. Really the requirements for the game are huge (CPU, ram, videcard - everything), and remember quake3 ran on just about any 3d card you threw at it. and lots of people had voodoos/voodoo2s by the time quake3 came around...

and lots of people have 9600+ cards now. But not everyone ..

yeah i kinda see your point but i still see the doom3 requirements as being quite considerable. I mean while quake3 required a 3d card, the other requirements were very reasonable (bout P 233, 32meg ram). While doom3 needs a 1.5ghz amd cpu and half a gig of ram and a very recent videocard to run smoothly at a decent res. Even my shiny 6800/amd 2.3ghz/512mb often lags here and there on high quality@1024x768 just because of the enormous ram requirements of the game. but anyways Quake 4 looks cool even if it will be another indoor corridor game like doom3....

can't blame em for having quality modes and reses that are designed to scale up to tommorow's hardware
runs fine on most machines low quality 640x480 and still looks fine. People are spoilt these days and expect too much for nothing :P
but yeah, it is probably relatively heavier than q3 in it's time. all this of course has nothing to do with the engine, which could be used in any number of ways. Indoor or outdoor, it's still triangles, textures and lighting

lol good ole Q3 engine!
It looks pretty slick in Medal Of Honour Pacific Assualt, i wouldent of thought that the engine could of been pushed that far

hehe and MOH ran like shit on most computers....
some more info swiped from: http://www.anandtech.com/news/shownews.aspx?i=22959
" - Quake 4 is a direct sequel to Quake 2, takes place just hours after the event of that game.
- During most of the game, you are fighting with other marines, however there will be solo missions.
- Some missions take place inside, others outside. You'll get to use vehicles at times.
- You're part of a military campaign attacking the Strogg homeworld.
- Returning weapons so far: blaster, machine gun, nailgun, shotgun.
- Multiplayer: "The multiplayer experience is more akin to Quake III: Arena", no vehicles.
- "With Doom 3 it was horror. With Quake IV, it's war."

lol yeah MOH ran like a french prostitue after a dollar bill...... which is fast :)
i fucken hate the MOH games.... with the exception of MOHPA which is half decent, but they run pretty decent on a half arsed machine if u keep your drivers upto date and dont try to push the detail.
MOH played on the worst and oldest boxes of snot I could throw it at just fine...
maybe.. just maybe.. thats a hint that an upgrade was in place, either PC or user :p

yes your right CVT in that MOH would run on old boxes, however the game looked absolutely shit at low detail, and to bump it up meant you needed a beasty computer at the time. And i remember that call of duty ran faster and had better graphics when it came out.
quote from the gamespy archives: (http://archive.gamespy.com/reviews/january02/mohaa/index3.shtm)
"pros: Great visuals; great sound; smooth online play; seemingly bug-free; runs at a solid framerate.
cons: Huge graphics tradeoff on older machines."
Anyway lets stop diverting and drool over Quake 4 somemore...
...... WTF machine where you running then?
i had 'the sugar machine' when MOHAA came out.
It was a AMD K6-II 500, 128 meg sd pc100, and a MX400 64meg vid card, AWE64 ISA mofo, 4 speed SCSI burner, 8 gig HDD.
This POS froze fucking constantly, would randomly reboot, couldnt play diablo2 (for no apparent reason), but i played mohaa fine.
